Snapchat exports now come with correct dates already attached to each file. That part works. The problems show up elsewhere: photos and videos have no location data, overlays like text and stickers arrive as separate files from the base photo, and long videos get split into several short clips instead of one file.
When you request your data from Snapchat, you get a ZIP with your photo and video files plus a file called memories_history.json. The media files already carry their capture date. What they do not carry is GPS location, because Snapchat keeps that information only inside the JSON file, not written into the photo or video itself.
If a photo had a filter, caption, or sticker applied, the base image and the overlay export as two separate files. Apple Photos, Google Photos, and every other gallery app show you the plain base photo, not the version you actually created.
Older long-form Memories sometimes get broken into multiple short clips in your export instead of arriving as one video. This happens on Snapchat’s side during export, not because of anything you did.
Fixing these three issues used to involve tools that pulled files directly from Snapchat’s servers using links stored in the JSON file. That workflow no longer applies. Current tools, including FixMyExport, work entirely with the files you already downloaded and extracted onto your own device. Nothing is uploaded to any server during local processing.
This means the folder structure you hand to the app matters more than anything else.
In Snapchat’s My Data settings, turn on both “Export your Memories” and “Export JSON Files.” Choose the complete export rather than a date range. Download every ZIP file Snapchat provides, since larger libraries are often split across more than one.
Do not point any app at a ZIP file, your Downloads folder, or a single subfolder inside it. Extract each ZIP fully. You should end up with one primary folder structured like this:

The json folder and memories_history.json must sit directly inside the primary folder. Media files must sit directly inside their matching memories folder, not nested further down.
If Snapchat gave you more than one ZIP, keep the folder that contains json as your primary folder. Move each additional memories folder from the other extracted folders so it sits beside the original memories folder, inside that same primary folder. Give duplicate folder names a unique suffix, such as memories 1, instead of overwriting the original. Do not rename or move individual media files.
Open the app and select only the primary folder, the one that directly contains both json and memories. Selecting memories_history.json on its own will not work. Only one My Data folder can be processed at a time, and there is currently no date-range or individual-item selection.
FixMyExport reads GPS coordinates from memories_history.json, where available, and writes them into the media file using your selected timezone for any related date fields. If a Memory never had GPS data attached, none is added or guessed.
Overlay files are matched to their base photo and merged automatically. If a paired overlay is missing or a merge attempt fails, the original base media is kept rather than lost. Overlay merging can be turned off if you only want the base files.
A beta option called “Join split videos into one” attempts to identify clips that belong together and combine them into a single file. This is optional and not guaranteed for every set of clips. When the app cannot confidently group or order a set, it exports the clips separately instead, and separate or joined outputs always get different filenames so nothing gets overwritten.
Full metadata writing is supported for JPEG images and MP4 or MOV video. Other image and video formats may still be copied or processed, but full embedded metadata is not guaranteed. Image handling covers JPG, JPEG, PNG, and WebP, with HEIC also recognized during mobile folder detection. Video handling covers MP4 and MOV.
The free version processes up to 200 files per export, with up to three export attempts allowed per device. An attempt counts even if the run only partially completes, and creating a new account does not reset that count.
Pro is a one-time purchase, not a subscription, and removes the file limit for local processing on one device. A Cloud add-on lets Pro users export an unlimited number of files directly into their own Google Drive or Dropbox account, using temporary local buffering before upload.
The number of Memories Snapchat shows you in-app may not match what actually arrives in your downloaded package. The app can only work with files present in your extracted folders, and it cannot recover a Memory that Snapchat did not include in the export. There is also no way to resume an interrupted export part-way through right now, so a stopped export has to restart from the beginning.
